SENTIRAS/DETECT/AIRBNB & SHORT-TERM RENTAL CHECK
    USE CASE // RENTAL

    RENTAL
    PRIVACY CHECK

In a short-term rental the host owns the fixtures, the network and the smart devices. A privacy check is the only way to know what is in the room with you.

How to check an Airbnb or short-term rental for hidden cameras

Major platforms prohibit cameras in bedrooms and bathrooms and require any device elsewhere in the property to be disclosed. That policy is enforced after the fact, by complaint. Verification, if you want it, happens on arrival and is your job.

A rental also differs from a hotel in one important way: the host controls the Wi-Fi. Devices on the property network are normal there, so the value of a sweep is in locating emitters relative to where you sleep and undress — not in the mere presence of a signal.

    WHAT TO LOOK FOR
    • A smart speaker, clock or hub placed inside a bedroom or facing a bathroom door
    • Devices with an unobstructed line to the bed, shower or changing area
    • Pinholes in vents, smoke detectors, plug sockets, books or picture frames
    • Wi-Fi networks or devices you cannot account for, especially camera-brand SSIDs
    • Fixtures that look newer, cleaner or differently mounted than the rest of the room
    THE METHOD

    Step by step,
    in order.

    STEP 01

    Prioritise three rooms

Bedroom, bathroom and any room where you will work. These are where recording is both prohibited and most damaging.

    STEP 02

    Take a network baseline

Note the property Wi-Fi and the devices you brought. Anything that appears in a bedroom sweep and is not yours deserves a closer look.

    STEP 03

    RF sweep at two heights

Perimeter pass at chest height, then knee height. Slow is more effective than thorough-looking; the detector needs a moment on each zone.

    STEP 04

    Optical pass on sight lines

Darken the room and check anything facing the bed or bathroom for lens reflections — this is how you find devices that record without transmitting.

    STEP 05

    Check the obvious hosts

Smoke detectors, alarm clocks, USB chargers, air purifiers, picture frames, decorative boxes, mirrors and vents.

    STEP 06

    Report through the platform

If you find an undisclosed device, photograph it in place, contact the platform's safety team and the local police, and request relocation rather than confronting the host alone.

    RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT

    What this
    actually takes.

    WHAT THIS DOES NOT COVER
    • Cameras recording to internal storage are invisible to RF — the optical pass is not optional.
    • A rental is saturated with legitimate wireless devices; interpret readings by position, not presence.
    • A single sweep on arrival will not catch a device switched on later in the stay.
    QUESTIONS

    Frequently
    asked.

Are hidden cameras allowed in an Airbnb?

No. Major short-term rental platforms ban recording devices in bedrooms and bathrooms outright and require any camera elsewhere in the property to be disclosed in the listing. Undisclosed devices are both a policy violation and, in most jurisdictions, unlawful.

How do I check an Airbnb for hidden cameras?

Prioritise the bedroom, bathroom and workspace. Run an RF sweep at two heights to locate transmitting devices, then a darkened optical pass on anything with a line to the bed or shower to catch cameras that record locally without transmitting.

Will a hidden camera detector work if the rental Wi-Fi is busy?

Yes, but you interpret it differently. A rental is full of legitimate wireless devices, so what matters is not that a signal exists but where it peaks — a strong, directional reading from an object pointed at the bed is the finding, not the network itself.

What do I do if I find a camera in a rental?

Do not remove it. Photograph the device and its position, leave the property if you feel unsafe, contact the platform's safety team, and file a police report. Platforms will normally rebook you and remove the listing.
