    Lens finders (optical detection). A lens finder is a ring of LEDs around a viewport. You look through it while sweeping the room, and a camera lens reflects the light straight back as a bright glint — retroreflection — regardless of whether the camera is powered, transmitting or recording locally. This is the single most reliable way to find a camera, precisely because it relies on the unavoidable physics of a lens rather than on any signal. Its limit is the human one: a lens behind a very small aperture at an awkward angle can be missed, so a lens sweep rewards patience and a slow pass from multiple positions.

    RF detectors (electronic detection). An RF detector listens for radio transmissions and alerts you as you move closer to a source. It is the tool for transmitting devices — live wireless cameras, active audio bugs, cellular trackers. Its blind spots are important to understand honestly: it cannot find a device that records locally and transmits nothing, one that is powered off, or one that transmits only in short bursts and happens to be silent as you pass.     Can your phone detect a hidden camera?

    Partly — and it is worth being precise about where a phone helps and where it quietly lets you down, because this is the most common question and the most over-promised.

    A phone can do three genuinely useful things. Its front camera can sometimes see the infrared LEDs that night-vision cameras use to see in the dark: in a fully darkened room, point the front camera around and a small light that is invisible to your eye may appear on screen. Network-scanner apps can list the devices on your Wi-Fi, which occasionally surfaces a camera hiding in plain sight on the same network. And magnetometer apps can detect the magnets in many vehicle GPS trackers.

    What a phone cannot do is the rest of the job. It will not see a camera that records locally and has no IR, it cannot detect a powered-off device, it misses anything on its own separate network or cellular connection, and the "detector" apps that claim to find bugs are mostly reading the phone's ordinary sensors with a dramatic interface.     Stop and think before you act, because the right first move depends on your situation.
