How to Find a Hidden Camera With Your Phone
Your phone can find some hidden cameras using three quick methods: in a dark room, its front camera can sometimes reveal the infrared lights a night-vision camera uses; a Wi-Fi scan can list cameras connected to the same network; and the phone's torch can catch the tell-tale reflection of a lens. These checks take a couple of minutes and are a reasonable first pass — but a phone also misses entire categories of camera, so it is worth knowing both what it can do and where it stops.

Method 1: the infrared check
Many hidden cameras need to see in the dark, and to do that they use infrared (IR) LEDs that emit light invisible to the human eye but sometimes visible to a phone camera sensor.
Turn off all the lights and draw the curtains so the room is as dark as possible. Open your phone's camera and switch to the front (selfie) camera, which usually has a weaker IR filter than the rear one and is more likely to pick up infrared. Slowly pan around the room, watching the screen for a small white, pale-purple or pinkish glow coming from an object — a smoke detector, a clock, a speaker, a vent. A steady point of light on screen where your eye sees nothing is a strong candidate for a night-vision camera. If your rear camera is the only one that shows IR on your model, try both.
This catches IR cameras only. A camera without night vision, or one that is currently powered off, emits no infrared and will not show up.
Method 2: scan the Wi-Fi network
A camera that streams or stores to the cloud is usually connected to a network, so listing the devices on the Wi-Fi can occasionally surface one.
Connect to the property's network and use a free network-scanner app to list connected devices, looking for names that hint at a camera or an unfamiliar manufacturer. In a home you control, you can compare the list against the devices you know about. The limits are real, though: a camera on its own separate network or a cellular (SIM-based) camera will not appear, a local-record camera that never connects shows nothing, and in a hotel or rental you often cannot see other devices on the network at all.
Method 3: the lens-reflection check
Every camera has a lens, and a lens reflects light straight back. This is the most reliable phone-based method because it does not depend on the camera transmitting or being powered.
Dim the room, then hold your phone's torch beside your eye and slowly scan the objects facing the bed, desk or bathroom from a low angle, looking for a small bright pinpoint of reflected light. Move slowly and from a few positions — a lens glint appears only at the right angle. What your phone will always miss
This is the honest part, and it matters. A phone cannot find:
A camera that records locally to a memory card and never connects to a network — no signal to scan for. A camera that is powered off at the moment you check. A camera with no infrared, in the infrared test. And anything on a separate or cellular network your phone cannot see. These are not edge cases; local-record and SIM cameras are common precisely because they evade the easy checks.
So a clean phone sweep lowers the odds but does not clear a room. The phone covers the cameras that transmit or use IR; a lens finder covers the ones that do not, by relying on the lens itself. Do "hidden camera detector" apps work?
Mostly less than they claim. Many simply read your phone's ordinary sensors and present the output dramatically. The two functions with genuine basis are the ones above wearing an app's clothing: a magnetometer reading (useful for finding the magnets in some devices, more relevant to vehicle trackers than cameras) and a network scanner. An app that "detects cameras" by waving the phone around a room without using the IR view or a network scan is not doing anything real. If you use one, treat it as a torch for Methods 1–3, not as a detector in its own right.
A confident five-minute check
Put the three phone methods together and add a careful eye: darken the room, run the infrared pan with the front camera, scan the network if you can see it, then do a slow torch-and-lens sweep of the objects facing private areas — and physically inspect anything that looks oddly placed. This is genuinely useful and free, and for many situations it is enough.
